Freedom

Freedom.   Today is the celebration of our nation’s freedom from the tyranny of England and it has me thinking a lot about what this word freedom means.  According to Dictionary.com Freedom is “the state of being free or at liberty rather than in confinement or under physical restraint.”  We have the power within to enact our own confinement by how we choose to use our minds.  We may choose to carry around the past, like a heavy and cumbersome chain and never experience the here and now.  All to often we spend our days like this, mired down in thoughts of what if, why me, and on and on, some call it the monkey mind syndrome.  Raise your hand if you have it!  I certainly do.  It is such a practice to keep it calm.  Life conspires to put things in your path to test your resilience, and sometimes it is too overwhelming.

The good news is we have a choice; we can dust ourselves off once again and begin right where we are in the moment in complete freedom.  We are so fortunate in the western world that we live in a democracy and even when faced with things we do not desire, we have a voice.  Even when one is not so fortunate to live in a democracy, one still has internal freedom and no one can ever strip you of that right.  Today as we celebrate our nation’s freedom, think about what this means to you personally.  I am choosing to be quiet today, thanking the universe for the blessings afforded me, and after this past week with fire lapping at my back door, I am once again reminded of the fragility of it all.  Don’t waste your time living in the past; you are not going there anyway.  Remember to live right now in this moment in complete freedom.  Happy 4th of July!
