People never learn anything by being told, they have to find out for themselves.

~ Paulo Coelho

When reading these words today I was struck by how true this statement is as to most human beings!  For example, in order to understand the word ‘hot’ most of us have to stick our fingers into the hot water, touch the hot plate, or go even further into the fire, before we can comprehend the word ‘hot’.  We also seem to jump into the fire, perhaps not literally, but with our behaviors until we can comprehend what is for our best nature and that of humanity.  Have you ever jumped into the fire in order to receive the message?  I know I most certainly have, and more than once . . . some of us learn at a slower rate than others!

Look a little deeper into this statement, however, and think about it as it pertains to you individually as a parent, a lover, and a friend.  We all to often find ourselves in roles of power trying to tell others what to do and when they don’t do as we have directed, we are disappointed (expectations).  This statement called to me in that I might find a better way when speaking with those I love, and even with strangers, to stop and listen more to someone else and their beliefs.

We all to often fall prey to listening to what others think and then in turn either making it our gospel or doing what the quote says, not listening at all.  This is especially true in the United States during these days of the campaign for election of the President.   We should all take the time to use our beautiful god given minds and think for ourselves, and reflect a little bit more about what we say to others.  We are not all-knowing beings, and we can learn from others especially when they gently guide us along the path.  However, when we are simply told, or directed, we all too often can only find out through our own experience . . . yes, that fire does burn!  Keeping this in mind, it is important to remember that every experience is not a bad one, but one from which we can grow and learn, become more enlightened on our spiritual path.  It has been this very concept that has helped me to stay sane through many trials and tribulations in my own life, and one I hope to continue to apply to challenges that will crop up in my life.  However, I am going to be very aware and make every effort not to ‘tell’ someone what to do, but rather to listen more and to guide people for I think the end results will be far more beautiful!
