When Animals Mourn

Reading this article today about grief http://www.npr.org/blogs/13.7/2013/04/11/176620943/when-animals-mourn-seeing-that-grief-is-not-uniquely-human which is specifically related to animals and the fact that they too grieve, I wanted to share this link and perhaps inspire people to read her book for further insight into the grieving process.  It is such a vitally important part of life for we all must learn to get comfortable with it, be able to stand in our own grief and be able to reach out to others as they walk the path.  When one is consumed with grief, it is those friends that encircle you holding you up with love and nourishment who are so vitally important on the journey.  Personally, I could not have done it without some amazing people around me and to this day 8 plus years after the event, there is still a need to be able to grieve when it creeps in to my soul.  Only by the grace, compassion and love of others who understand that grief is a journey am I able to release those feelings adequately enabling me to go on to live my life to the fullest.  And so I leave you with the author, Barbara J. King’s closing words:

It won’t ease our deepest grief to know that animals love and grieve too. But when our mourning becomes a little less raw… may it bring genuine comfort to know how much we share with other animals? I find hope and solace in [these] stories. May you find hope and solace in them as well.

Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the
whole staircase, just take the first step.
 ~Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

  1. Watching my own cats, it is clear to see the depth of their emotions.
When they lose those that they love, it hurts them.
My male cat was completely heartbroken when his best friend, his litter mate, suddenly died.

  2. Sorry for the loss of your dear sweet cat, Mary.
