The Guest House

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they are a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice.
meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.

Be grateful for whatever comes.
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

This poem touches my soul.  When I observe these words at the very core of my soul, I become much more aware that however I am feeling in any moment to do so with grace. To understand that sitting with my shadow is not to be met with shame, but rather to know that this shadow side also offers up many wonders. When I can stand in the awareness of knowing all that I am experiencing is for the growth and richness of my soul, I am left standing with heartfelt wonder and appreciation of the universe and remain fully open to my guides. For this I give abundant thanks.

  2. Rumi has guided me through lots of my grief! Knowing our shadows and working with them is exactly how we become clear and create space to heal as you say. Wonderful post. Have a great day. ❤️

  6. I absolutely agree with you Heather… loving All of ourself is the beginning of freedom. I’m creating a MagnificentBuddy Volunteer Project locally to connect people in need of quality time with a like-minded companion each week… to help them focus on celebrating life rather than focusing on their fear/suffering. I think this poem from rumi could be our mascot… Hope you’re well and enjoying life… xx Barbara xx
